Brian Lomax Cup 2019: Enfield Town vs FC United

This is a story from the SD archive – the FSF and SD merged to become the FSA in 2019.

Two supporter-owned clubs will be going head-to-head in a prestigious pre-season game in July’s Brian Lomax Cup.

Enfield Town will be taking on FC United of Manchester on Friday 12th July to decide the winner of this year’s Brian Lomax Cup – an annual competition running since 2002 to celebrate fan ownership in football.

Enfield Town are looking to defend the title, having beaten Clapton Community 4-0 last summer and the club’s chairman Paul Reed said: “This will be a firm test for the squad to kick off the 2019-20 season and will be a great occasion.”

The cup is named after Brian Lomax, the former managing director of Supporters Direct, considered to be the ‘founding father’ of the supporters’ trust movement and who passed away in 2015.

Enfield’s opponents FC United of Manchester were founded by supporters in 2005 following the acquisition of Manchester United by Malcolm Glazer. FC United remains one of the largest member-owned, democratic football clubs in the country and attracts some of non-league football’s biggest crowds.

The Brian Lomax Cup will take place at Enfield Town’s Queen Elizabeth II Stadium on Friday 12th July kicking off at 7.45pm.

Dutch giants Ajax are currently near the bottom of Eredivisie and are having a terrible season by all accounts with just two wins. Their dreadful form culminated in a 5-2 thrashing at longtime rivals PSV this week and Brian Brobbey’s profligate finishing is hardly helping matters. Comedic stuff.
