A coalition of ex-players, pundits and media figures are the latest to call for substantial reform and the creation of an independent regulator.
Led principally by former Manchester United defender and England international Gary Neville, the group are calling on supporters to sign their petition calling for the introduction of independent regulation.
At the time of writing, the petition had reached 85,000 signatures and looks set to trigger a Parliamentary debate when it passes 100,000 signatories.
Neville said: “There is one big opportunity now in this next few months to influence the outcome of English football and create a fairer game for all.
“I urge you: if you hated me as a player, if you dislike me as a pundit just to listen to me this one time and sign this petition which will bring in independent regulation and transparency at the top of the game we all love.”
The petition is also being supported by former players Jamie Carragher, Rio Ferdinand, Darren Fletcher, Gary Lineker, Jamie Redknapp and Micah Richards.
Media figures such as FSA Writer of the Year Henry Winter are also backing Fair Game’s petition. The Fair Game letter was also signed by FSA vice-chair Tom Greatrex.
“As the fan-led review gets underway, it is hugely significant to have the active support of high profile pundits and ex-players to improve football governance for the future,” Tom said.
“The spectre of a breakaway closed shop Super League has united all of those who wish to protect our game.
“Regulatory oversight that is independent of clubs has long been part of the FSA’s proposals, and it now has widespread support. It is time for those fundamental changes to protect, enhance and sustain the game to be made.”
What are the next steps for the FSA
