Crisis at Morecambe leaves the club on the brink

The crisis at Morecambe has deepened this week, with the National League club facing the very real prospect of folding before they kick a ball in anger in the 2025-26 season. 

With staff wages continuing to remain unpaid, and no confirmation of a new owner, the National League’s compliance and licensing committee announced on Monday that it had suspended Morecambe from the league with immediate effect, until the 20th August.

This means that the Shrimps’ opening three games of the season have been postponed, and unless current owner Jason Whittingham can complete a sale of the club in that timeframe, Morecambe’s expulsion from the competition seems increasingly likely.

On Wednesday it was announced that all football operations at the club had ceased, after insurance cover for football activities lapsed following a missed payment.

The club were already under a transfer embargo from the National League, have cancelled a number of pre-season fixtures, and now face an exodus of their few remaining senior players.

A joint statement issued by prospective new owners Panjab Warriors, alongside FSA members the Shrimps Trust, minority shareholders and the Morecambe and Lunesdale MP, Lizzi Collinge, said: “As each day passes, the debts of the club are mounting, with wages now outstanding at over £316,000, and further significant debts that need to be paid to ensure survival of the club, which Panjab Warriors have already committed to pay within hours of completion with Bond Group.
