EFL trophy retains B-team format

League One and League Two clubs have overwhelmingly supported controversial proposals to allow the continued involvement of Premier League “B teams” in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Last season the Checkatrade Trophy trialled the introduction of Premier League development teams to play against League One and League Two sides.

Now the EFL clubs have agreed to extend the format by another two years – with almost 67% of the clubs supporting the motion.

FSF chief executive Kevin Miles said: “A substantial majority of our members at League One and League Two clubs last year registered their opposition to development teams from Premier League clubs participating in the Checkatrade Trophy, and that dissatisfaction was clearly reflected in the attendance figures at games where supporters voted with their feet.

“We have no indication from our members that their opposition has changed, and we suspect that the fact that a two to one majority of clubs have voted in favour of retaining the current format is a reflection of the urgent need of many at this level of the game to share in the very modest trickle-down of the wealth generated by the Premier League just to survive.

“For most fans however, the crucial red line is any suggestion of ‘B’ teams’ participation in the League competition, and we welcome the assurances that the Trophy arrangements do not represent the thin end of the wedge. We will remain vigilant on this important matter of principle.”
