Extra Time!

This is a story from the FSF archive – the FSF and SD merged to become the FSA in 2019.

Every now and then a theme presents itself for Extra Time! Last month was a cheat’s charter and this month sees the long ranger come to the fore. From 40 yard headers to managers volleying goals from the halfway line it’s all here – along with the most unbelievable miss of all time.

Argentinean football is a prime league for crazy happenings but we’ve seen few things more jaw dropping than Martin Palermo’s 40 yard header for Boca Juniors against Velez Sarfield. He actually heads it harder than most can kick a ball.

Long-range headers are like buses aren’t they? No, not late, with ever-increasing fares and moody drivers – we mean you wait ages for one then two turn up at once. This one’s from the Greek lead with Panathinaikos scoring against Larissa.

It’s not just current pros who are capable of these feats though. Check out ex-Yugoslav international Dragan Stojkovic ‘score’ an amazing volley from the dugout in the J League. You never lose it, eh? Although the ref didn’t see it that way and, for some reason, sent him off. Killjoy.

From three of the most amazing goals you’ll see (well, the last one wasn’t a goal but, y’know) to the most astonishing miss of all time. Not only was this only about three inches out but it was actually going in anyway – hang your head Ilija Sivonjić.

From the ridiculous to the ridiculously sublime and a goal involving two overhead kicks. Although all the ‘OMG Lolz! Best skillz eva’ type comments we’ve seen online don’t disguise the fact that the first one was a mishit.

If that’s all a bit too much Youtube action for you we’ll finish off with every away fan’s nightmare. Our cap is doffed to Football Spotter for this one – the worst away end in football at Miejski Klub Sportowy Znicz Pruszków in Poland.

Thanks for reading, until next time!

That’s all for this month but don’t forget to check the FSF’s website every Friday afternoon to waste five minutes of your employer’s time on our round-up of the week’s football news – The Week That Was. If you spot anything that you think is worthy of Extra Time! don’t forget to let us know – cheers!
