Fan concerns mean Scunthorpe ‘end interest’ in FC100,000 investment
Following a weekend of speculation, the board of Scunthorpe United today announced in a club statement that they had ‘unanimously decided to end our interest’ in a potential investment from FC100000.com having ‘listened to fan concerns’.
Speculation had been growing after FC100000 launched on social media this weekend, claiming to have an agreement in principle with a club. Local journalists reported that a deal had been signed, and an announcement video had already been filmed.
There was widespread outrage from Scunthorpe supporters to the news, including a club sponsor who expressed their concern at the potential takeover with a promise to remove sponsorship from the club if the deal went ahead.
The Iron Trust, along with other fan representatives, met with the club this morning to voice those concerns, and were told by the board that they would not be proceeding with the project.
The club currently sit top of National League North, and this weekend broke the record for attendance at a sixth tier match in England with 8,274 fans in attendance, who saw see them run out 3-1 winners against promotion-chasing Chester.
Who are FC100000.com?
FC100000.com is the brainchild of Will Brooks, who previously launched a similar scheme known as MyFootballClub in 2007, which ended up taking control of Ebbsfleet United in February 2008.
After initial excitement interest in the project dwindled: from a peak of more than 30,000, membership numbers declined to around 3,500 in just over two years. The stake in the club was sold to Kuwaiti investors only a couple of years later, after the club’s relegation to the Conference South.
