Fan reps meet Sky Sports executive
Back in March, a delegation of supporter representatives from the FSA’s Premier League Network, who have set up a working group on broadcast issues, met with senior executives from Sky Sports as part of efforts to create meaningful dialogue between fans and broadcasters.
FSA National Council member Kat Law chaired the meeting, describing it as a “constructive and pragmatic” discussion. Supporter representatives explained fans’ ongoing concerns around the disruption and additional costs incurred by late fixture changes and anti-social kick-off times.
Sky executives outlined the complexities involved in the broadcast selection process, particularly with the expansion of European competitions and the number of variables outside any one organisation’s control.
While recognising those challenges, our fan reps made the case for immediate meaningful changes including: earlier notice of broadcast schedules, reducing late changes where possible, clearer communication on scheduling, and exploring whether TV selections in the first half of the season could be confirmed earlier – before European competitions reach their knockout stages and scheduling becomes more constrained.
FSA chair Tom Greatrex said: “We welcome the opportunity to have a constructive and honest discussion with Sky about the real impact that broadcast scheduling decisions have on match-going supporters.”
“Fans understand there are complexities involved, but there is a clear and growing feeling that the balance has shifted too far away from those who attend games week in, week out. Practical changes – particularly around earlier notice and greater transparency – would make a significant difference.”
