Fans’ Parliament update – Burnham ruled out but Caborn steps up

This is a story from the FSF archive – the FSF and SD merged to become the FSA in 2019.

News has just arrived that The Rt Hon Andy Burnham MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media can no longer make Fans’ Parliament due to unforeseen commitments which is obviously a disappointing development as we were looking forward to a good debate with Burnham, who follows Everton.

However, all is not lost as we’ve been hard at work behind the scenes to ensure you still have the chance to hear a top-class speaker. Although the Toffees fan couldn’t make it we got ourselves out of a sticky situation (arf) and are very pleased to announce we’ve secured The Rt Hon Richard Caborn MP. We’re also pleased to say Lord Triesman, Chairman of the FA, will still be speaking at the afternoon session.

Caborn is currently the Government’s ambassador for the 2018 World Cup bid and has recently held the position of Sports Minister. He was also instrumental in working on the fan friendly European White Paper on Sport, published in July 2007, which the FSF submitted evidence to through the Independent Football European Review.

Amongst other things the paper recommended clubs distribute TV income in an equitable way in order challenged the growing power that a handful of clubs have and looked at how football could ensure home-grown player get their chance.

The FSF’s Fans’ Parliament will be in session at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday 5th July from 10am until 5.30pm and is FREE to attend. There’ll be debates and seminar sessions on some of the most important and topical issues, like rising ticket prices, competition and ‘the big four’, and Safe Standing alongside debates on what role technology should play in the laws of our game. And much, much more…

In short, this is a fantastic opportunity to get your views across to people who really can make changes… and have a bit of banter with your fellow fans, of course.
