Founder of trust movement Brian Lomax dies

This is a story from the FSF archive – the FSF and SD merged to become the FSA in 2019.

Brian Lomax, one of the pioneers of the supporter trust movement in Britain, has died after an illness. Click here for funeral details.

Helping to rescue Northampton Town in the early-1990s, Brian founded the Cobblers Trust – the first supporters trust in Britain. Brian was the first supporter elected director of a football club in 1992 at Northampton Town, after supporters rallied round to save the club.

Later, he was instrumental in establishing Supporters Direct, becoming its first managing director. He would later become chair of the organisation.

FSF chairman Malcolm Clarke said: “He was a decent man and the founding father of the supporter trust movement in this country.

“He spent a significant part of his life promoting and championing support ownership, and the involvement of supporters in running their clubs.

“The FSF sends its sincere condolences to all of Brian’s friends and family.”

UPDATE (Wednesday 4th November): Brian’s funeral will be held on Friday 20th November at 12.00 (St Marys Church, The Rectory, 2 Rectory Ln, Barby, Warwickshire CV23 8TZ ).

Emily and Catherine (his Daughter and Wife) wish the funeral to be open to all, please extend this invitation to anyone you think would like to attend (they are also happy for people to wear football shirts if they wish). They do not want flowers but will be collecting donations for a charity (TBC).
