Four fan-owned clubs competing for pre-season honours

The Brian Lomax Cup takes place every pre-season and celebrates the role of supporter-owned football clubs. The trophy is named after the founding father of the supporters’ trust movement, who sadly passed away in 2015.

Alongside the Supporters Direct Shield, these two trophies provide an opportunity celebrating community ownership and promoting supporter-owned clubs, and are competed for each pre-season.

This year’s fixtures feature a pair of rematches. In the Brian Lomax Cup taking place this Saturday (23rd July), Merthyr Town of the Southern League Premier Division South will play host to City of Liverpool FC of the Northern Premier League Division One West, in a re-run of the 2018 SD Shield.

Merthyr will also be presented with their Away Day of the Year Award on the day, having been crowned the best hosts in Step 3, as part of our partnership with the Non-League Paper’s National Game Awards.

Next Saturday (30th July) sees National League North side Banbury United take on FC United of Manchester of the Northern Premier League at Broadhurst Park for the SD Shield, a return fixture following last season’s pre-season friendly at Banbury.

We wish all our sides the best of luck in their preparations for the 2022-23 season.
