Free Lions in Germany: Your Euro 2024 Fans’ Embassy Guide

Thousands of England fans will be heading to Germany next month to follow the Three Lions through Euro 2024 and our Fans’ Embassy team will once again be on hand to support those of you making the trip.

Helping fans abroad since the late-90s, the Free Lions Fans’ Embassy team offers on-the-ground support to fans following the national team.

In the build up to kick off we’re pleased to publish our 164-page guide to Germany and every host city England are due to be playing in.

As always that includes a detailed look at transport options, venues, food and drink and much more.

On top of that we’ll also produce individual match editions of the Free Lions fanzine which serve as a helpful guide to each fixture.

Hard copies of those will be available from our Fans’ Embassy locations before each game as well as being published online. Free Lions subscribers back home will receive their copies after the tournament.

Thomas Concannon from the Free Lions Fans’ Embassy said: “A lot of work has gone into preparations for this summer’s Fans’ Embassy in Germany – working with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, various UK policing agencies and the FA to make sure everything goes smoothly.

“We’ve got decades of experience helping fans navigate big tournaments and this summer will be no different in what promises to be a fantastic competition.”

Background to Free Lions – the long-running England fanzine

Free Lions is the England fanzine produced by the Football Supporters’ Association as part of our Fans’ Embassy service supporting England fans abroad.

Free Lions is published for every England away game and a team of volunteers (aka the Fans’ Embassy) is usually on hand offering advice and information for travelling supporters at tournaments, qualifiers and friendlies.

It’s not just about making sure that fans stay safe and know the best places to grab a bite to eat or drink on matchday.

Supporter representatives travel to the relevant venue in advance of each fixture along with FA security staff and the UK police delegation – fact-finding and garnering information to pass on to fans and lobbying host authorities for the optimum treatment of visiting supporters.

Much of the preparatory work is therefore a well-trodden path: liaison with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), various UK Football Policing Unit and the FA, the production of the Free Lions guide book, and the recruitment of the Fans’ Embassy volunteer team with the range of skills required to deliver a comprehensive service.

That multi-agency approach continues to pay dividends in terms of ensuring a much warmer and accommodating welcome when England fans arrive in town. Nonetheless, the FSA remains prepared to challenge our “partners” in this work whenever it is felt that the interests of fans demand it.
