FSF backs launch of All Parliamentary Football Supporters Group

This is a story from the FSF archive – the FSF and SD merged to become the FSA in 2019.

The Football Supporters’ Federation will support the work of the newly-formed All Parliamentary Football Supporters Group, which had its inaugural meeting on Monday 23rd November.

The cross-party group will be chaired by Ian Mearns MP, a season ticket holder at St James’ Park, and aims to strengthen the voice of football fans in Parliament.

Jason McCartney MP told the FSF: “I am proud to join the new Football Supporter’s All-Party Group in Parliament under the Chairmanship of Ian Mearns MP. As a huge Huddersfield Town fan and season ticket holder, football is a big part of my life and I look forward to working with the APPG to promote the interests of fellow football fans.”

The FSF will provide secretariat duties for the group which aims “to represent the interests of match-going football fans and to support the aims and objectives of the Football Supporters’ Federation”.

As well as lobbying football clubs and leagues to secure a better deal for fans, the FSF also works with politicians to secure a better deal for loyal supporters.

FSF chief executive Kevin Miles sits on the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s Expert Working Group on Football Supporter Ownership and Engagement while the pre-election #VoteFootball campaign gave supporters across the country an opportunity to lobby prospective MPs in their constituency to protect clubs from “exploitative, clueless or reckless owners”.
