The FSA and GambleAware would like to invite you to an online session on 13th April 2023 (6pm) to discuss how we can work together to tackle gambling harms within your local communities.

At GambleAware’s 10th Annual Conference, Professor Sir Chris Whitty spoke of the 3.6 million people affected by gambling harms in the UK. He also highlighted that gambling is a hidden problem which comes from the stigma associated with it.

Gambling harms have been identified as the next major public health issue. To tackle this, GambleAware is launching a major public health campaign in April to reduce the stigma around seeking help and support for gambling harms.

We want to put gambling ‘on the table’ and talk about how it’s adversely affecting the people we love and the places we live in. Although sports betting is the fourth most common type of gambling, it is the second most common among those experiencing harm and 71% of sports bets are on football. We need to change things.

Football supporter organisations are at the heart of communities and do brilliant work tackling local issues. We’re specifically inviting supporter organisations, podcasters and fanzines in the North West, the Midlands and London, as these are areas GambleAware have identified as having a greater prevalence of gambling harms.

During the online briefing session, we will be:

• Introducing GambleAware
• Giving an overview of the scale of the challenge (with a regional focus)
• Sharing an update on the stigma public health campaign
• Opening discussion on how we would like to work together to tackle gambling harms
