Last weekend saw the third edition of the annual Game Changers event, hosted by Football Supporters’ Association associate members Fulham Lillies at Fulham Pier. The event brings together women with a shared passion for the game for a day of discussion.

Across a series of workshops, attendees explored the history of women’s football, the impact of VAR, how to tackle sexism in the game, and the many reasons football continues to bring people together.

The day began with an empowering talk from acclaimed author and journalist Carrie Dunn, who took attendees on a fascinating journey through the history of women’s football in England.

From the obstacles female footballers have faced over the decades to the challenges that continue today, Carrie explored how the women’s game has evolved and the work still needed to create equality.

Next, Pro Ref (formerly PGMO) and ex-Premier League referee Chris Foy tackled one of football’s most hotly debated topics: VAR.

Attendees were taken behind the scenes to learn how the technology works before being shown a series of real-match incidents and asked to decide whether they constituted fouls.

The session sparked plenty of lively debate, with opinions often divided, but also gave attendees a greater understanding of the decisions referees have to make and the role technology plays in the modern game.

The most conversational session of the day saw Harriot Coleman-Fry lead a discussion around the different forms of sexism that continue to exist within football. Attendees shared their own experiences and perspectives, creating an open and supportive space to discuss how we can challenge sexism. It was a powerful moment where our shared negative experiences brought us together to create a positive.

The day rounded off on a suitably positive note, with Heloisa de Souza introducing attendees to her Substack newsletter, The Good Football.

Heloisa regularly celebrates the positive side of football – from heartwarming moments that capture the internet’s attention to the human connections made away from the pitch and the incredible range of emotions that make the game so special. It was the perfect way to finish the day: a reminder of why, despite its challenges, we all love football.
