Wigan Athletic’s supporter liaison officer Ian Wadsworth has said that most Wigan fans still do not know what an SLO is and what the role does.

Speaking to the Progress With Unity podcast recently, Ian said: “I’d say it’s quite an evolving role. It’s not really taken off yet.

“I’m sure the majority of the fans listening to this don’t know what an SLO is and don’t know what we do.”

Along with Jason Taylor, Ian has been in the SLO role at Wigan since November 2013. In their first year they have carried out some important work, such as forming the Fan Advisory Board. Despite this, Ian would like the profile of the role to be higher, and for more fans to engage with it.

Ian says that having fans recruited in the role, rather than it being handed to existing club employees, improves the role and lends it more credibility.

“We’re a bridge between the club and the fans to ensure the two are constantly communicating,” Ian said. “That’s why we do the FAB meetings. If fans have got a problem on a matchday or anything else, or any ideas, they can throw them over to me and Jason, and we’ll meet with the club.”

The SLOs at Wigan will be meeting fans next month to discuss the stadium, stewarding, concourses and catering – all important issues to supporters of the club.
