Premier League sells final 2019-22 TV package to Amazon

The Premier League has sold its remaining TV packages for the three seasons from 2019 to Amazon and BT Sport.

It is the first time an online-only broadcaster, that exclusively uses streaming services as opposed to traditional broadcasts, has won the rights to show live Premier League football.

Amazon will show all 10 matches over one bank holiday and another 10 during one midweek round on its Amazon Prime service. BT Sport has bought the remaining rights package for 20 games, covering two midweek rounds.

The Football Supporters’ Federation said:

“Fans are already of the view that there is too much live football on TV and this announcement concludes a deal that has pushed the number of broadcast games to record levels. The main driver for this increase has been the 2016 ruling by Ofcom which has directly led to this increase. Introducing a third broadcaster into the mix just means more subscriptions for fans.

“We are concerned that the number of broadcast games could have a negative effect on attendances by away fans in particular. It is vital that more of these television revenues are invested in guaranteeing the participation and contribution of match-goers.”
