West Ham fans criticise inflation-busting ticket price hikes

This is a story from the FSF archive – the FSF and SD merged to become the FSA in 2019.

West Ham United have announced that ticket prices at the London Stadium are set to increase significantly next season.

The price of a regular adult season ticket at West Ham United is set to rise by more than four times the current rate of inflation – the biggest increase reserved for under-16 season tickets, with ‘band one’ options rising by a staggering 91% according to KUMB.com.

West Ham United Independent Supporters’ Association (WHUISA) expressed their disappointment at the club’s pricing and described the new plan as “cynical”.

“We are disappointed that the prices of season tickets for our youngest fans and those with accessibility requirements have been increased, in the case of band one seats by 203% in some instances,” WHUISA say.

WHUISA say the 2019/20 pricing undermines the club’s drive to offer “affordable, family football.”

“There is no indication that families who can no longer afford the costs of tickets will be prioritised in migrating to lower cost seating,” WHUISA said this week. “Or how they should even apply for such a move without first renewing at the new higher prices.

“Either West Ham is a family-friendly club with commensurate pricing, or it isn’t.

“These increases appear cynical and run counter to the long term and legitimate aim of building a loyal support base among the next generation.”

WHUISA have called on the club to reverse the price rises for next season and extend the deadline for season ticket renewals for the supporters impacted.
