Consultation on changes to the women’s game launches
Women’s football has hit the headlines in recent weeks as proposals which could see a radical shake-up of the way the game is run have been considered by clubs, and we are seeking fan feedback on the issues raised.
As reported in the Guardian, the Women’s Professional League Limited (WPLL), the company which runs the WSL and Championship, has consulted clubs on a range of options to increase the profile, profitability and sustainability of the women’s game.
The most eye-catching of these was the possibility of pausing relegation from the leagues as a way of increasing their size.
Some of the other mooted changes include allowing development teams (B-teams) in the FA Women’s National League (FAWNL), to support the development of the talent pathway for players.
The chief executive of WPLL, Nikki Doucet, told the Guardian, “We fundamentally believe promotion and relegation is an important differentiator and an important competitive advantage for us, relative to other women’s sport leagues globally.”
