Green Football is back and running across two weekends from Monday 9th March to Sunday 22nd March with clubs across the country getting involved.

The campaign’s big theme this season is that the places we play and watch football “are under threat from increasingly extreme weather, and so is everything the game gives us” at both elite and grassroots level.

Huddersfield Town, Leeds United, Leicester City and Millwall are some of those who’ve made plans to back Green Football Weekend – if your club or supporters’ group has any green initiatives we’d love to hear from you to help spread the word too.

Green Football says:

• 100,000 grassroots games are likely to be called off this year because of pitch conditions;
• 75% of the pitches used by the top three tiers of English women’s football and the Scottish Women’s Premier League are projected to be at serious risk from climate threats;
• By 2050 one in four professional English clubs are likely to face flooding every year.

What’s on around the leagues?

Derby County

On matchdays, the club is tackling single-use plastics with a reusable cup system. Supporters return cups to kiosks or designated bins, where they are washed and reused at future fixtures. This removes thousands of plastic cups from landfills and oceans, and engages supporters with environmental impact data via QR codes on each cup.

At Moor Farm Training Ground, the club’s solar panels already generate clean, on-site electricity while helping to reduce energy emissions. Find out more here.

Huddersfield Town

The Terriers are supporting Green Football and leaning into the ‘defend where football lives’ aspect of the campaign.

“Our Accu Stadium is unusually blessed with acres of land around it, not many other teams can boast that their supporters can walk along a beautiful riverside en-route to the match and admire the woodland as a scenic backdrop to one of their stands,” the clubs says.

“Defending where football lives means multiple things, but at the Accu Stadium this means caring for our natural environment by helping to keep all areas free of litter and recycling, travelling to matches by lower emission modes of travel like public transport, cycling and walking and reducing the carbon footprint of food choices at the match.”

The club are encouraging supporters to make their own pledges here ahead of their clash with Lincoln City.

Leeds United 

All Green All Leeds “focuses the club on addressing the environmental issues that are most relevant to us, including climate action, resource efficiency and nature”. All Green All Leeds aims for the club to become net-zero by 2040 while engaging fans and encouraging action through club platforms.

Millwall

Millwall are encouraging fans to join them in the fight against climate change, as part of the Lion Living sustainability initiative, by taking climate-friendly actions, and making green pledges, such as travelling greener, eating more veg and saving energy. The club have a track record in this area and signed an FSA / Pledgeball Sustainable Travel Charter which committed to reducing domestic flights.

Leicester City

Leicester City in the Community’s sustainability initiatives are also helping to support the protection of the spaces where football lives by highlighting that football does not only exist within stadiums; it thrives in everyday environments such as streets, parks and local green spaces that bring communities together and provide places to play the game.
