Green Football’s Great Save is running from Tuesday 11th March to Wednesday 2nd April – and this year’s initiative has a big focus on reusing football kit and equipment.

The Great Save encourages clubs and supporters across the UK to join forces and save kits from landfill by donating, selling or reusing playing and training gear, rather than throwing it away.

The campaign says around 100,000 tonnes of sportswear ends up in UK landfills every year while around 120,000 predominantly grassroots matches are called off because of water-logged or flooded pitches.

Clubs across the country are involved with donation points to be announced in the near future and Green Football are keen to get supporter groups involved at their own clubs.

How can you get involved?

Individual fans: Donate, sell, or re-use your kit. Check if your club will have a donation point or visit your local Salvation Army shop which has dedicated drop off points. Register your donation and you’ll be entered into a draw for a range of prizes, including match tickets.

Supporters’ groups: Many clubs are also looking to team up with their own supporters’ groups on ideas for local initiatives such as promoting donation points, hosting repair/sewing workshops or even offering discounts on new kits for fans who trade in used ones (with the old kit upcycled or passed on). The FSA can help you liaise with your club while Green Football have prepared a toolkit for fan groups.
